‘자유분방한’ 섹스가 정신건강에 좋다

최근 미국 뉴욕대학과 코넬대학교의 연구팀은 캐주얼 섹스가 건강에 미치는 영향을 분석해 이 같은 흥미로운 결과를 발표했다.
이들 연구팀은 성적 취향이 개인의 건강에 미치는 영향을 조사하기 위해 371명의 미국 대학생을 상대로 연구를 진행했다고 설명했다.

그 결과 '사회성적(socio-sexual)'으로 자유로운 학생들의 정신적 건강상태가 그렇지 않은 학생들 보다 좋게 측정됐다. 사회성적으로 자유롭다는 뜻은 이른바 '원나잇 스탠드' 등과 같은 하룻밤 짧은 만남 등을 포함하는 것으로 이번 연구 결과가 나오자 논란이 일고 있다.
성적으로 자유분방한 학생들의 스트레스 지수는 다른 학생들보다 눈에 띄게 낮았으며 자신감, 만족도, 성취욕 등 감정적인 지수도 좋게 나왔다.
이와 더불어 우울증, 불안감 등도 다른 학생들에 비해 적은 수준으로 측정돼 눈길을 끌었다.

연구진은 “사회성적으로 자유로운 사람들의 성적 활동성이 캐주얼 섹스에서 잠재적으로 올 수 있는 부정적인 영향(potentially harmful consequences)을 완충하고 있는 것으로 보인다”고 설명했다.
기존의 연구에선 여성이 캐주얼 섹스에서 남성에 비해 오르가즘을 느낄 확률이 적은 것으로 알려졌으나, 이번 연구는 성적인 만족도에 있어서 남녀 간의 큰 차이가 보이지 않는다며 기존 통설을 뒤집었다.
한편 이번 연구 결과가 알려지자 온라인 등에서 논란이 일고 있다. 자유로운 성관계와 문란한 성관계의 구분이 모호할 뿐 아니라, 성적인 관계를 너무 가볍게 여길 수 있다고 우려하는 목소리다.

Casual sex may be good for your health, contrary to the popular notion that one-nighters will leave you with low self-esteem and depression, according to a U.S. study.
Researchers from New York University and Cornell University surveyed 371 college students for their study, published in the journal Social Psychology and Personality.
The study found that “socio-sexually unrestricted students ― or those who willfully have sex outside of a relationship ― reported heightened wellbeing following casual sex.
The researchers found the students were less stressed and felt better, which suggested that higher socio-sexuality buffered against any potentially harmful consequences of one-time hook-ups.
“When it came to those who were socio-sexually unrestricted, having casual sex was associated with higher self-esteem and life satisfaction and lower depression and anxiety,” the researchers wrote.
“Typically, socio-sexually unrestricted individuals reported lower distress and higher thriving following casual sex, suggesting that high socio-sexuality may both buffer against any potentially harmful consequences of casual sex and allow access to its potential benefits.”
Although past reports have shown that women are less likely than men to have an orgasm during casual sex, this particular study showed few overall differences between genders.
