비행기 조종사가 카메라에 담은 '폭풍전야'의 밤하늘

[인사이트] 심연주 기자 = 태풍이 몰아치기 전, 고요 속에 긴장감이 흐르는 그 시간을 우리는 '폭풍 전야'라고 부른다.

빗방울과 번개, 그리고 천둥을 동반한 먹구름이 몰려온다는 사실은 알지만, 맨눈으로 확인할 수는 없다.

그런데 폭풍전야의 밤하늘을 바로 눈앞에서 목격하고 이를 카메라에 담은 비행기 조종사가 있다.

최근 인스타그램 계정 'jpcvanheijst'에는 비구름이 도시를 향해 질주하는 모습이 공개됐다.

공개된 사진 속에는 엄청난 양의 먹구름이 온갖 조명이 반짝거리고 있는 도시로 향하고 있다.

비를 잔뜩 머금은 구름 사이로는 번쩍거리는 번개 때문에 생긴 눈 부신 빛이 새어 나온다.

놀라운 광경을 포착한 사람은 바로 네덜란드 비행기 조종사인 크리스티안 반 헤이스트(Christiaan van Heijst)다.

크리스티안은 비행기를 조종하면서 시시각각 변하는 아름다운 하늘의 모습을 사진으로 남긴다.

때로는 별빛으로 수놓아진 밤하늘을, 또 때로는 아름답게 석양이지는 저녁 하늘을 카메라에 담는다.

폭풍전야를 담은 이 사진은 베이징과 상하이를 사이를 지날 때 마주하게 된 장관이다.

그는 "중국을 비행할 때 번개를 품은 비구름을 마주했다"며 "불과 몇 분 전에 레이더망에 포착된 구름이었다"고 당시를 설명했다.

이어 "비록 이 구름 때문에 경로를 10km 정도 변경해야 했지만, 정말 아름다운 광경이었다"고 덧붙였다.

Flying somewhere between Beijing and Shanghai, we encountered a very active weatherfront with beautiful and very active thunderstorms. The cloud here seen on our left started to appear on our weather radar only a few minutes before and started to show off an amazing display of lightning that grew ever more intense. When we got closer, we saw that the cloud was going to burst through our flight path and we had to deviate up to 10km to avoid flying into this cell. Growing with a speed of up to 5000/6000ft per minute (1,5-2km per minute) straight up into the air, this was certainly a hazard to our airplane if we didnt fly around her.
